Chapter 13

Godric paced next to the chimera body that had faded into man form as the sheriff and Nico Wolcott arrived on the scene. The citizens of Dark Forest were already returning to normal. They quartered off the gory mess, and Davis directed traffic around the site.

Sheriff Jones got to the body first. He pulled off his hat and slapped it on the side of his leg. “These beasts keep cropping up. I don’t like it.”

“No kidding,” Godric said. “I don’t know what happened. I just took care of it.”

Jones tipped his head, and sauntered to a line of people waiting to give a statement.

Nico stood beside Godric. “This is how many?”

“Were there any while I was gone?” Godric replied.

“No.”

Godric did a quick count in his head. “Including the ones we killed rescuing Ozz and Lily, this makes nine. What do they want?”

“Us,” Nico said as he crouched down. He cocked his head as he studied the man’s face. “Another lion. Prides aren’t usual in this part of the states. They usually like the warmer climates.”

“Jenson could have branched out.” Godric resigned himself to the fact killing would always be part of his life. It sucked. Rogues, and now chimera, had to be put down. Too many innocent people would be ripped to pieces if they weren’t, but he didn’t like how comfortably numb he’d become when it came to handling the carnage. “There was a lion, not a chimera, but a lion in Moon Rise Park. Allen, I think his name was. Anna would have more information on him.”

Nico stood. “Then I should talk to her. How is she? And the boy?”

“Fucked-up,” Godric said without seeing a need to candy coat.

“And you?”

“The same as always.”

Nico patted Godric’s shoulder. “How’d that gift work out for you?”

Godric fingered the Witch Stone hidden under his shirt. “I almost don’t want to give it up.”

Nico gave a brief smile. “You can keep it until you have the kid under control. Let me tell Jones we’re heading out to your place. You can get going.”

Godric didn’t follow the order. He went with Nico to talk to the sheriff.

Jones paused in his questioning. “I’m trying not to have a temper tantrum here, boys, but please tell me those things aren’t looking for my niece.”

Nico’s brow went up. “Why would you ask that?”

“The reports are scattered, but that’s usual for a thing like this.” He tipped his head toward the body. “But what everyone keeps telling me is this one was demanding a woman named Anna.”

Godric growled.

“That mean something to you, son?” Jones asked.

“My mate’s name is Anna.”

Jones cracked a ghost of a smile. “Congratulations on the mating, but I think you have yourself a problem. I’ll have my boys process the body. And, Nico, I have two men at my station house claiming to be werewolf and want me to hire them as deputies. I’m going to need a confirmation on that sometime in the next day or two.” Jones went back to his questioning.

Godric and Nico walked toward Godric’s truck.
